OPM Alert: HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION INTRODUCES CHANGES TO HUMAN RIGHTS COMPLAINT PROCESS EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: April 2007 The Human Rights Commission has introduced immediate changes to the human rights complaint process which is designed to increase the timeliness and effectiveness of human rights complaint processes. In late 2007 we expect that Bill 107 will achieve proclamation. With this the Human Rights Commission of Ontario will continue to have responsibility for accepting & dealing with human rights complaints. The Commission has introduced changes in its procedures that will result in tighter timelines & participation by all parties. The changes include: Mandatory mediation dates established by the Commission. - Mandatory fact finding meetings.
- Onerous disclosure obligations for the parties.
- Risk for consequences where parties fail to participate cooperatively in the new process
These new processes that are in place will have an immediate impact on what is expected of you as the employer respondent in connection with dealing with human rights complaints.
